Part-Part-Whole

Part-Part-Whole

Students love to use these part- part- whole graphic organizers made from kid's plates to show addition or subtraction with manipulatives.

How do you use Part-Part-Whole Charts or Mats in your classroom?

Fact Family Portraits

Treat the Fact Families like Family!

My students love the job of choosing the Fact Family to display for the day (or few days)! I simply bought a frame from the $1 store, turned the family picture around to show a piece of blank paper, and used a visa-vis to write the family of facts. The three 'family' member's numbers are in the middle, and each of the family of facts is written on the sides (just like a frame border). This could be a group display, where each group would have their own Fact Family Portrait or one for the whole class.

Get creative! How else could this be used? Work stations?

Measurement Toolkits are it!

Measurement! Measurement! Measurement!

Students love to use tools to measure! If the tools are availalbe, they will measure! I would always have these included on my Math Manipulatives Shelf for students to use whenever they needed a manipulative or a tool to describe what they are doing. These particular toolkits include: centimeter cubes, penne noodles, black beans, lima beans, and one inch color tiles.

Geometry- Tangrams

Tangrams! Students love problem solving with Tangrams! These Tangrams have bugs on them so the pieces can be easily identified. Students are then asked to create shapes with the Tangrams using a certain number of bugs. As seen in the examples, create a rectangle containing seven bugs or create a pentagon with ten bugs. My students LOVED this activity!

Open House Folder Assignment

At our Open House I like to have a set of graded papers out for the parents to see. In order to keep the grades covered, I always assign a folder assignment for my Class Open House. This year, at this time, we are working on Geometry. Each child was in charge of making their work folder which must include: their name, the three types of angles-labeled, the three types of lines we are studying-labeled, and four two dimensional shapes-labeled. Some students chose to use the letters in their names to show these requirements, too. It was a easy and fun activity to really see what the kids know and they also have a study sheet to take home.

Motivational Clipboards

I use these motivational clipboards each day as a reward. Students love the opportunity to use these in class as a reward! I simply mod-podged decorative items on a 99¢ clipboard! I created one for boys and one for girls! Easy! And Fun!!

Money Sticks

Students love money sticks! Just like the math power towers, they have so many uses! They can be used in centers, in class and team games, as well as a motivation to do their best (like using tickets in class).
